The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the New York Yankees to win the 2024 World Series.
The Dodgers won their fifth game to clinch the title, by a final score of 7-6 on the Yankees’ home field at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. This marks the eighth World Series championship.
It was the first World Series victory for the Dodgers’ star pitcher, Shohei Ohtani. Meanwhile, the team made history as the first to claim the top title in pro baseball after falling behind by five or more runs.
“We’re obviously resilient, but there’s a lot of love in this clubhouse that won this game today,” the Dodgers outfielder said Mookie Betts said after Wednesday’s showdown, per MLB.com. “This is it. It’s love. It’s grit. It’s just a beautiful thing. I’m just proud of us, and I’m just happy for us.”
While Los Angeles crossed its fingers, hoping for the best, the Yankees – back in the World Series for the first time since 2009 – proved no match for their West Coast rivals, including the Dodgers’ Freddie Freemanwho was named Series MVP. Freeman, 35, hit four home runs in his team’s first four games against the Yankees, and drove in 12 runs over five games to tie the World Series record set by a former Yankee. Bobby Richardson around 1960.
“That’s all,” Freeman said in a postgame interview on the field. “I’m telling you, I wouldn’t be here without the support of everyone wearing a (Dodgers) shirt tonight.”
He downplayed the individual accolades and pointed to the Dodgers’ collective trophy, saying, “That’s about it!”
“Every spring training, that’s the goal,” Freeman added of winning the Series. “And to be honest, with this group of guys, I couldn’t have asked for a better year. Holy cow.”
Before the first pitch of the night, Freeman’s wife, Chelseatook to Instagram and posted a photo of herself with her son, Charlie, 8, in the stands. In another original image, he showed off the back of his black leather jacket, emblazoned with a picture of his wife and the words “Freeman” in bright Dodger blue. “Game 5! Let’s gooo,” he captioned the post.
The ballplayer has been a standout player since the start of the World Series. During the first Dodgers-Yankees game on October 25, he hit a grand slam to win the game. After the grand slam, Freeman ran to Chelsea and they embraced for a moment of love on the sidelines.
It was a high point in the couple’s life after a difficult year, including a health battle for their 3-year-old son, Max. In July, Chelsea rushed Max to the hospital after he couldn’t stand or walk. He eventually received a diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome. (Freeman and Chelsea are also parents to 3-year-old Brandon.)
The week before the Dodgers entered the Fall Classic, Freeman opened up about the couple’s “trying” year.
“Every day is mental,” he said The New York Times. “I’m mentally exhausted. Not only did (Max) get better. There are many others that go like this. I can tell you need more than three days. I might tell you I need the rest of my life to (reset).”
