Colorado baker Jack Phillips has spent more than a decade battling for his faith in the state’s courtrooms, but he says his Christian faith has only grown stronger.
Phillips has been in the headlines for years, most notably with a Supreme Court victory in 2018 when a 7-2 majority of the high court found that he and Masterpiece Cakeshop had been deemed unconstitutional by the Colorado Civil Rights Commission.
The commission found that Phillips violated the civil rights of a same-sex couple who wanted him to bake a cake to celebrate their “wedding.” Phillips refused because his Christian beliefs did not allow him to promote gay marriage.
However, the Supreme Court victory was not the end of the legal battle. A transgender lawyer deliberately sought out Phillips to commission him to bake a cake to celebrate the lawyer’s “transition” from male to female.
Phillips refused, prompting another court battle. On October 8, the Colorado Supreme Court dismissed the attorney’s case against Phillips on procedural grounds, CBS News reported.
It wasn’t the kind of sweeping victory Phillips deserved. And it may not be the end of endless litigation. Attorneys for the plaintiffs said their side is considering different legal options, according to The Denver Post.
But it was an undeniable setback for Phillips’ opponents.
And for Phillips, winning again has reaffirmed his faith.
“One of the most important things to come out of this is to make my faith stronger and to make my family closer and build all of our relationships with Jesus Christ,” he told Fox Digital in an article published Thursday.
“It also taught me that God provides everything we need in these last days because we don’t make the wedding cake and the income that is there. But he also gives us many other opportunities.
At a time when the faith of Christians is openly targeted by Democrats at all levels of government — including a federal government overseen by a true “devout Catholic” president — Smith’s refusal to give up in the face of constant attacks should be an inspiration to everyone. . America, regardless of religious affiliation.
Phillips proved that one individual standing up can make all the difference in the world.
The founders intended the United States to be a nation that guaranteed religious freedom. Phillips’ long-running battle against the wedding cake, or “transition” cake, is one man’s statement on the basic concept.
The fact that he not only maintained the war but asserted that he strengthened his belief is an example to any American man or woman who believes in the Constitution.
Phillips has spent years of his life – at great cost to his business – standing up for the core American principle that every individual has the inalienable right to pursue their religious beliefs without government interference.
His court case has held that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”
These are the first words of the First Amendment to the Constitution, the opening of the Bill of Rights which is the birthright of every human being blessed to be a citizen of the country created by the Founders.
That Phillips fought for and he did it against the left ankle-biters, who have shown no shame in their endless antagonism, or limits to the willingness to abuse the court system to try to torture people into submission.
This is a fight that every conservative should support, regardless of religion. It is a war every believer should support, regardless of politics.
This is a fight at the heart of what the United States is ideal for and what it wants to be.
The modern American left has made no secret of its goal to marshal the full power of the government it controls so that the country becomes a place where coercion defeats religious beliefs, but for people like Phillips, that possibility only creates belief.
There are lessons for every American — and the November 5 presidential election would be a good place to start applying them.
