YouTuber Ran has documented an impressive road trip through parts of China using the Nio electric sedan ET5, showcasing its impressive range and powerful battery.
The nearly hour-long documentary highlights the automaker’s impressive performance and innovation that could set the pace for others in the industry.
It started to get interesting for Ran when he pulled into one of the Nio battery-swapping stations, switching out a pack of 75 kilowatt hours for a massive unit of 150 kilowatt hours. He ordered a battery on the phone.
“It’s ready for me,” Ran said during the auto show as the sedan backed into the garage-like building. The battery is turned on in a few minutes.
Nio has more than 2,000 such exchange stations in China and Europe, according to InsideEVs. The process can be started with a voice command and has been documented by other social media users.
The larger semi-solid battery steals the show, providing 554 miles of range before reaching 0% on a charge, as noted by InsideEVs report on the trip.
Watch now: How easy is it to charge an EV?
“Full solid-state batteries promise to improve safety, energy density, and charging speed over current-generation lithium-ion batteries … Semi-solid-state tech … offers some of the same benefits,” wrote InsideEVs.
The combination of battery power with a unique swap concept is an exciting solution to overcome the fears that still arise among potential EV buyers.
But Kelley Blue Book reports that Americans travel less than 40 miles per day on average, with the capabilities of most EVs on the market — mostly sleep-deprived so-called anxiety.

A typical Tesla Model 3 has a range of about 363 miles, along with more than 50,000 superchargers around the world that can provide a charge up in about 15 minutes, for reference.
Ran’s video also shows unique images of the Chinese landscape, including mountain formations, windmills on the horizon, and other electric vehicles showing the way.
“Now let’s look at all the trips we took today,” he said as he pulled up an app on his phone. His companion on the journey is Nomi, Nio’s artificial intelligent dashboard unit that has eyes and can talk.
While surprising, automakers and battery developers in the state and elsewhere are making similar equipment. Ample operates a system of battery exchange stations in California with plans to grow. The Ford Mustang Mach-E set the world record for range, traveling 569.64 miles on a charge.
Competition in the sector should translate into better, cheaper rides for consumers in a growing market. The International Energy Agency notes that one in five vehicles sold globally last year was electric. Sales are boosted in the US by strong tax breaks on new and used models.
Importantly, EVs that replace gas burners in the US, China, or anywhere in the world reduce the amount of hot exhaust that comes out, as reported by the US Department of Energy. Particles in vehicle exhaust are linked by medical experts to increasing the risk of lung, heart, and other health problems.
Switching to an EV can also save you up to $1,500 a year in gas and maintenance costs.
Ran checked the mileage and cost on the back. Nio charges $42.46 for a battery that lasts up to two days of use. It doesn’t take much time for them to make a long trek.
The data breakdown includes details on how powerful things like the massage seats and climate control are. These features affect EV range, Ran notes. But he also made the 11-hour drive bearable, according to him.
And the large battery potential should appeal to most motorists.
“I like the idea of borrowing a higher spec battery,” one viewer commented on the video.
