Britney Spears’ never aired comments discussing her conservatorship have been shown on screen years later.
The 42-year-old US pop queen, who rose to stardom in the 1990s, is under conservatorship for 13 years until it is terminated by a judge in Los Angeles in November 2021.
Since 2008, complex legal rules, usually applied to the very sick or elderly, have allowed the singer’s father, Jamie Spears, to control his freedom and finances.
After her conservatorship ended, Britney wrote at length in her memoir, The Woman in Me, about what she experienced.
And now, the interview that took place in 2016 has been seen by fans for the first time.
Appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show eight years ago as a conservator, Britney talked about the album Glory, which was released at the time and featured the singles Make Me and Slumber Party.
Before Cut out of the television interview, a clip in which he mentioned that he was under the control of his father was shown by ITV this weekend in a one-off episode, The Jonathan Ross Show: Special Guest.
‘Let me ask you about the new album, because you are more involved in this music, I know, than the previous one,’ Jonathan started by asking her.
‘You’ve taken control, are you more in control of the music than before?’
‘Yes,’ Britney then confirmed.
‘Why is it taking so long? Why did you wait until now?’, he asked.
‘Well, there are only so many reasons. I’m not going to tell you everything…’, Britney began.
Jonathan interjected: ‘Well, we know a lot of the whole story, so we don’t have to go through the whole story.’
‘It began as a conservator; I was in the conservatory; It’s my third year in that, and I just felt like a lot of things were planned for me to do and tell me what to do,’ the pop star explained.
‘And I was like, for this (album), I want to make my baby, and I want to make myself.’
“I’m very strategic about the way I do it and that’s why it’s so important to me,” he added, receiving cheers from the studio audience.
Jonathan then praised: ‘I hope it will really connect with people and I suspect it will connect with other people when they know it’s coming so much more than you.’
He asked earnestly: ‘You seem to be in a very good place now. What is a safe word?’
“Yes sir,” Britney replied with a smile, keeping her answer brief.
The talk show legend went on to address his millions of fans, warning that ‘millions of fans’ feel ‘protective’ of Britney and her well-being.
He asks if he ‘draws strength from it’ or if, at times, it can feel overwhelming.
“It’s really genuine,” she said of her relationship with fans.
Recalling the show he did in the capital, he shared: ‘Last night I performed and (the audience) in Vegas was so far away, but they were in front of you (in London) and it was more personal. .
‘He’s not drunk or high; it’s so intimate. They were there and they were with me, so it was great.’
After the moment came to the internet, Britney’s fans supported her.
User X BIBLEGIRL354 wrote: ‘Glory will always be my favorite Britney album because it so authentically shows her vision, voice and heart – my heart breaks knowing her family did everything they could to take her spirit away.
‘I’m very happy this can see the light of day, and it makes me emotional’, said SlumberPartney.
‘Britney was brave enough to speak up. Her courage and strength still inspires me today’, praised DannyWxo.
In her book Britney’s 2023, which has sold two million copies in the US alone in January this year, Britney said that the legal arrangement ‘reduced (her) femininity’.
The Toxic hitmaker said she was ‘never good enough’ for her father and having someone in charge of her independence and finances made her ‘feel sick’.
Britney wrote: ‘I would do some creativity here, but my heart is no longer in it. As far as the passion for singing and dancing, it was almost a joke at that time.
‘I’m a robot. But it’s not just a robot – a child’s kind of robot. I’ve become so infantilised that I’ve lost a piece of what makes me feel like myself.
‘The conservatory stripped me of my womanhood, made me a child. I became more of an entity than a person on stage. I always felt music in my bones and blood; they stole it from me.’
“If they allow me to live, I know that I will follow my heart and go out in the right and possible way,” he added.
In her release, Britney admitted she had to ‘build a different identity’ and start seeing herself as a ‘strong and confident’ woman.
Ever since Jamie was removed as Britney’s conservator, he has remained low-key and is mostly seen in Louisiana.
Last year, he underwent a leg amputation procedure.
