Austin Butler‘s daily transformation into Benny’s The Bikeriders set full of “dirt and grime,” the head of the film’s makeup department, Ashleigh Chavisexclusively against Us Weekly.
Chavis went about his daily routine, going for a walk us through what it was like to ask Butler, 32, to read for filming.
“Austin would come to me, we would cut his hair and shave it to the right length. He had fake tattoos that he applied every day,” she recalls. “It involves shaving your arms, preparing everything and everything. And then, of course, there’s always the dirt.
Chavis “mixed a couple of different products” to get the perfect mix of “dry dirt and dust and dirt” to create “road dust” in Butler.
“These guys weren’t wearing helmets at the time and the dust on the road was just like, you know, floating on them but they kicked it back from their bikes to each other,” he explained. “He always had some element of liquid lubricant under his fingernails, always rubbing it on his hands just because he was a guy who played bikes.”
Butler stars together Jodie Komer and Tom Hardy at Dear Cyclists, which is showing in theaters today, Friday, June 21.
Directed by Jeff Nichols, a film, set in the 1960s, follows the rise of the Chicago motorcycle club Vandals MC. The film was inspired by the 1967 photo book of the same name by Danny Lyon.
While helping the characters come to life, Chavis wanted to bring “an element of (that) dry dusty dirt” to the screen. Another element that he has a big hand in is creating tattoos for each rider. Chavis works with makeup friends Christine Tinsleywhich he called “Actually Go-to to make the most realistic looking tattoo in Hollywood,” to “manage” the film’s ink.
While some of the film’s stars have been covered in ink, Chavis praised them The Bikeriders costume department to put more tatted actors on long sleeves.
“We have to cover everyone’s tattoos, it’s just very modern. … Men in the 60s didn’t have full arm tattoos or even half arms or really like that. Where they were placed was just different,” he pointed out, name Beau Knapp and Tom Hardy as the most inked up star – and the one with the longest tattoo transformation.
“Beau is one of the things we have to hide before applying (fake tattoos),” he said. “Tom, we just try to cover it every day and then add some to his hands and that’s it.”
Chavis credits the cast and crew of the film with a lot of trust, which made his experience even better. He also shared a special shoutout Michael Shannonwho he works with George & Tammy.
“He’s not kidding. He is a professional and a master at his craft,” she said. “He was a big part of me getting to work with The Bikeriders. … Define me as a potential head of department. He played a big role in this.
