Amazon’s The checkout function encountered technical problems on Friday, preventing customers from completing their purchases. The e-commerce site displayed an error message with a photo of a dog during the outage when people posted about it on social media.
To run its website, Amazon relies on its own data center infrastructure. But the company’s Amazon Web Services division didn’t report any technical issues when the checkout feature didn’t work. AWS downtime can cause problems for the internet as many companies rely on the market-leading public cloud.
An Amazon spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Over the long weekend in the US, Amazon has started promoting discounts on products as part of its Labor Day sale. But people can’t buy discounted products because of an error, as some people have shown on the X social network.
The Amazon Help Account on X replied with a recommendation to contact the company.
Amazon has warned investors that technical incidents could lead to lower sales and a worse perception of the company’s products and services. Healthy sales were nearly $148 billion in the second quarter.
