All arrangements have been implemented at the Government Engineering College here for the smooth counting of poll votes in the Tirunelveli Parliamentary constituency, which recorded a polling percentage of 64.10 in the elections held on April 19.
District Collector and Returning Officer KP Karthikeyan, Public Observer Sonali, Tirunelveli City Police Commissioner Pa Moorthy and Tirunelveli Corporation Commissioner Shubham Thakare Dnayandeorao visited the counting center on Monday to inspect the preparations made at the Government Engineering College for smooth counting of votes. He also checked the second random number online from the counting officer.
Candidates and agents can enter the counting center through the entrance on Reddiyarpatti Road after parking their vehicles in a nearby lot. Cell phones and smart watches will not be allowed inside the counting center.
Though 23 candidates are in the fray, the main contestants are C. Robert Bruce of Indian National Congress, M. Jancy Rani of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Nainar Nagenthran of Bharatiya Janata Party and P. Sathya of Naam Thamizhar Katchi. Out of the four candidates, the fierce competition is between Mr. Robert Bruce and Mr. Nainar Nagenthiran.
A total of 10,60,461 voters including 5,13,441 men, 5,46,963 women, 57 others polled their votes in 1,810 polling booths including 331 sensitive polling stations in Tirunelveli Parliamentary constituency. CCTV cameras were installed in 1,175 sensitive and vulnerable polling booths to monitor voting by District Collectors between 7 am and 6 pm on April 19. 3,434 senior citizens over 80 years of age and disabled voters have used the postal voting facility, which was delivered. in front of the door.
Of the six Assembly constituencies in Tirunelveli Parliamentary division, Alangulam Assembly division, home of beedi rollers and farmhands posted the highest polling percentage with 73.10, followed by Ambasamudram (65.55%), Radhapuram (65.41%), Nanguneri (62 ,51%), Tirunelveli (62.28%) and Palayamkottai ‘highly literate and prosperous’ (56.62%).
The EVMs used in the polls were taken to Tirunelveli Government Engineering College, the counting centre, to be kept in a room where CCTV was installed. The police have made 3-tier security arrangements at the counting centre, where floodlights have been installed and watchtowers have been erected to check the movement of foreigners in this sensitive zone.

After the election model code of conduct was clamped after the election notification made on March 16, the surveillance squad, police, income tax department got Rs. 2.74 crore-worth of unaccounted cash, liquor and gold during a surprise check conducted at the suspected place and vehicle check in the Tirunelveli Parliamentary constituency. The seized articles and cash will be returned after submission of acceptable documents, the official said.
In Tenkasi (Reserve) Parliamentary constituency, which includes Tenkasi, Kadayanallur, Vasudevanallur, Sankarankovil, Rajapalayam and Srivilliputhur Assembly constituency, 10,32,976 voters including 4,94,574 men, 5,37,327 women and 67 percent other voters to register their vote. 67.72.
Of these, 70.63% voters from the Rajapalayam Assembly segment cast their votes, followed by Srivilliputhur (70.55%), Tenkasi (67.07%), Sankarankovil (66.53%), Kadayanallur (66.51%) and Vasudevanallur (65.32%).
While the ruling DMK fielded Rani Srikumar, Puthiya Thamizhagam founder president K. Krishnasamy was the AIADMK candidate in this constituency. BJP and the Naam Thamizhar Katchi fielded B. John Pandian of Thamizhaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam and Mathivanan.
The EVMs used in the polls have been kept at UPS Polytechnic College, the counting center at Kodikurichi near Tenkasi, where 3-tier security arrangements have been made.
