It’s getting colder and the evenings are getting darker, so it’s only right that the cozy season is already well underway.
And when this time of year rolls around there is nothing better than curling up inside with a cup of tea and some kind of good bake.
If you’re not a Bake Off star in the making, you’ll probably be stocking up on treats from your local bakery or supermarket, and if there’s a Waitrose nearby, now’s a good time to visit.
That’s because the retailer just unveiled more than 30 new baked goods, many of which will make perfect fall treats — from Cinnamon Croissant Cups, to Apple Tarte Tatin Turnovers.
The range follows a significant increase in customer demand for baked goods, and has options to suit a wide range of tastes.
There are some new breads that all sound deliciously autumnal, including Sourdough Baguette (£2, intro offer £1.60), Dark Chocolate and Orange Sourdough Bloomer (£3.50, intro offer £2.80), and Curried Tear and Share Bread (£3).
Those who like to add a little spice, can do with the new Jalapeño and Cheddar Breadstick (£1.50), or for something a little sweet you can choose the Cinnamon Croissant Cup (£1.40), Ultimate Chocolate Croissant Cup (£1.40) , Pistachio Croissant (£1.75, intro offer £1.40), Belgian Chocolate and Raspberry Ganache Brownie (£1.75, intro offer £1.40), or Tiramisu Bun (£1.75).
There are also classics like a bag of Raspberry Jam Donuts (£1.25), Raspberry Bakewell Tart (£1.75, intro offer £1.40), Blueberry Crumble Muffins (£1.75), Sicilian Lemon Drizzle Muffins (£1.75), and Hazelnut Ganache Millionaire’s Shortbread. (£1.40).
In addition, the supermarket is also launching an exclusive Portuguese Lemon rice cake, known as Bolo de Arroz (£1.40, intro offer £1.12).
The supermarket says it has experienced a 9% increase in patisserie sales compared to last year, and Portuguese sweets in particular are attracting customers’ interest.
Searches on Waitrose.com for ‘Pastel de Natas’ have increased by 137% in the last 90 days, while searches for Portuguese tarts have increased by 113% in the last 30 days. So, Waitrose wants to offer customers with innovative taste combinations and a wider market, starting with this light and fluffy snack.
This cake is made from a mixture of rice and wheat flour and can be eaten as a dessert, or a snack served with coffee.
Waitrose developed the recipe with a bakery based in Porto, and the cake is baked in a cylindrical paper case, which is blue and white – the colors of Portugal.

Serena Jackson, Patisserie Product Developer at Waitrose said: “We love our delicious Portuguese Iced Lemon Bolo de Arroz, developed in collaboration with a Portuguese bakery. The cake is made in the original way with a sponge made from rice flour. However, we have introducing a unique twist to the cake. This hybrid includes a clear lemon curd filling and a sweet lemon icing, offering foodies a dynamic culinary fusion that encourages premium indulgence.
“We know that our customers are all about food exploration and we see an increasingly popular culinary trend around citrus fruits as customers go to specific regions for the taste and quality they want. The new Bolo de Arroz offers customers the citrus flavor they are looking for, with clear lemon curd filling and sweet lemon icing.’
