In a must-see appearance on MSNBC, Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-TN) went with Andrea Mitchell, dismantling the left’s narrative with calm but relentless facts.
The former US Ambassador to Japan and a staunch Trump ally delivered a masterclass to expose the weapons of the Department of Justice (DOJ) and highlight the hypocrisy of the left-wing media.
Mitchell, trying to get around Hagerty about the controversial nomination of Matt Gaetz as Attorney General, found himself struggling to keep up as Hagerty systematically dismantled his talking points.
Addressing Gaetz’s nomination, Hagerty did not shy away from defending Trump’s bold decision, directly linking the American public’s frustration with the politicization of the DOJ.
Andrea Mitchell:
What is your reaction to Matt Gaetz as Attorney General? Now, will you support him?Bill Hagerty:
Listen, Andrea, it’s amazing that people are responding the way you’ve shown, because there’s no one better to channel the American public’s frustration with the weapons of the Justice Department than Matt Gaetz. You can understand the President’s frustration with the DOJ.During the first campaign, he used the fake Clinton dossier to spy on her. Look at what happened in the first Trump administration – all this fake Russiagate hoax. The DOJ prosecuted him for years.
In 2020, the DOJ went big tech and censored Hunter Biden’s laptop to throw the election to Joe Biden. Consider what happened in 2024: The DOJ, with its colleagues around the country, brought five different cases to try President Biden’s main opponent, President Trump. I can understand the frustration in wanting to put a change agent in place. I’m not surprised at all.
Andrea Mitchell:
I don’t want to litigate everything that happened with Donald Trump because there is a lot of evidence to support many of these allegations and, in fact, the indictment—Mar-a-Lago, the poor handling of intelligence.Bill Hagerty:
I think the American public is louder than anyone. He gave the strongest mandate we’ve seen in 36 years as a reaction to all this.Andrea Mitchell:
But the Trump-appointed judge dismissed them all, and did not fully vet them. Let’s say that the legal system at work, there is no question.Bill Hagerty:
It doesn’t work. It’s a weapon.
Mitchell tried to spin, bringing charges against Gaetz. But Hagerty did not flinch, pointing out the media’s fixation on unproven accusations while ignoring the DOJ’s overreach.
He details how the DOJ, in cahoots with Big Tech, denied the Hunter Biden laptop story before the 2020 election, which ultimately swayed public opinion in favor of Biden.
Andrea Mitchell:
Well, how about this nomination?Bill Hagerty:
As I said, this nominee is actually an outspoken critic.Andrea Mitchell:
This nominee has his own record. There are questions about him. He was on the floor of the House showing photos of women, bragging about his sexual exploitation and the drugs he used. The ethics investigation has not been released. He was supposed to be elected tomorrow, but he backed out. But what about all the questions and accusations against him? A co-conspirator and his friend are serving 11 years in prison for sex trafficking. I mean, there’s a lot to investigate there.Bill Hagerty:
Andrea, you spoke for yourself – this is an accusation. It’s great that you’re more upset about the allegations than about the weapons of the Justice Department. The American public has lost faith in the DOJ. Think about it – agents the DOJ sends to spy on parents who go to school board meetings. It’s just amazing. As the American public has seen all of this, they have seen people like Matt Gaetz, who are willing to stand up and call it wrong, and President Trump is willing to put someone in a place that will change all of this.
Andrea Mitchell:
That’s what the American public voted for. The same Department of Justice that indicted and prosecuted Hunter Biden.Bill Hagerty:
Well, if you think about what this Department of Justice is doing in 2020, they’re reaching for big tech to censor Hunter Biden’s laptop. This is a letter composed by Antony Blinken, by the way. Think about the political dirty tricks the Biden administration is playing.Blinken got 51 so-called intelligence experts to sign a letter saying Hunter Biden’s laptop was Russian misinformation, and the DOJ cooperated. They go out and usually make deals with big tech to censor laptops. He threw the election to Joe Biden as a result. This DOJ has a big problem.
The exchange highlighted Mitchell’s inability to counter Hagerty’s well-documented examples of DOJ misconduct.
Hagerty didn’t stop there. When pressed on Pete Hegseth’s nomination as Secretary of Defense, Mitchell tried to downplay the Fox News commentator’s qualifications. But Hagerty was quick to defend Hegseth, citing his Ivy League education, combat experience, and inspirational leadership.
Andrea Mitchell:
Let me ask you about two other options. Pete Hegseth, the Fox News commentator, is a decorated Iraq and Afghanistan combat veteran, but he never ran the $800 billion operation, overseeing 1.3 million active-duty service members. Does he have the management experience to be a weekend Fox News anchor to do something as important as the Pentagon in the middle of two wars?Bill Hagerty:
Pete is a graduate of Princeton, a graduate of Harvard. He is my constituent in Tennessee. He is an inspirational leader. If you think about some of the people we have today, like Lloyd Austin, who refuse to hold anyone accountable for what happened in Afghanistan. The Department of Defense has been grossly mismanaged under the current regime. It is necessary to change dramatically. He needs to stop working on pronouns and go back to lethality. People like Pete can lead.Andrea Mitchell:
Do you agree that women should not fight?Bill Hagerty:
We have many female pilots in combat. I have voted for several Biden appointees. I do not agree with them on every point, but they should have a chance to hear and serve.
Mitchell’s attempts to steer the conversation toward speculative topics, like Hagerty’s potential cabinet ambitions, fell flat. Hagerty explained that her focus remains on representing Tennessee and advancing President Trump’s agenda.
Andrea Mitchell:
Now, you have taken yourself out of the statement for the Secretary of State, which has reportedly been considered.Bill Hagerty:
Andrea, I never found myself. This is just speculation.Andrea Mitchell:
What about the Secretary of the Treasury? The work is still not done, and arguably, you have a lot of experience in that area.Bill Hagerty:
Again, Andrea, I’ve avoided speculating on this. President Trump will make that decision, and he will make it his own. He will build a team around him that he is comfortable with and works well with. In whatever role I choose, I will be here to try to move that agenda forward and respond to the mandate that the American people gave me last week.Andrea Mitchell:
But you certainly won’t deny that you want to be in the cabinet.Bill Hagerty:
Again, I have never speculated on whether I wanted to enter or leave the cabinet, and I will continue to do so. I had a great career in business, as you mentioned. It was an honor to serve as the US Ambassador to Japan under the previous administration of President Trump. There is no greater honor than to represent the people of Tennessee in the United States Senate.
