Two people died in hospital within a day of being the victims of separate violent attacks during the Notting Hill Carnival, police said.
A woman who was stabbed at Carnival in front of her three-year-old daughter while trying to save someone from being attacked died on Saturday.
His death came a day after top chef Mussie Imnetu, who worked under the likes of Gordon Ramsay, died of a “catastrophic brain injury” after being found unconscious near Carnival in Queensway.
Mayor Sadiq Khan described the second tragedy as “heartbreaking” and said the violence was a “betrayal of the values ​​Carnival was founded to celebrate”.
Cher Maximen, 32, remains in a critical condition after trying to protect a man from an attack in Golborne Road at around 6pm on Sunday August 25.
She was taken to St Mary’s hospital in Paddington but despite the best efforts of medical staff, Ms Maximen died on Saturday morning, the Metropolitan Police said.
Detective Chief Inspector Alex Gammampila of the Met’s Homicide Command said: “My thoughts are with Cher’s loved ones as they understand this terrible loss.
“They are being supported by specialist officers and we will ensure that support continues.
“Cher was at the Carnival with a young child. We have been in close contact with our local authority partners and Cher’s family since the incident to ensure that the child is safe and cared for.
On Tuesday officers arrested Shakiel Thibou, 20, of Masbro Road in Hammersmith.
He was charged with attempted murder and appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
He was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on September 25.
Two Thibou brothers also appeared in the dock in connection with the same incident. Sheldon Thibou, 24, from Hammersmith has been charged with violent disorder, possession of a stun gun and assaulting an emergency worker. Meanwhile Shaeim Thibou, 22, of West Kensington has been charged with violent disorder and assaulting an emergency worker. He indicated a not guilty plea to the charges. Westminster Magistrates Court heard how Ms Maximen had been stabbed while trying to stop another carnival goer from attacking him.
Prosecutor Adriatic Ahmed told the court: “He is an innocent man. When he was protecting his intended victim … he was stabbed. He fell back to the ground.
“The offense took place in broad daylight.”
“In light of Cher’s death, the offense will be reviewed together with the Crown Prosecution Service,” the Met said on Friday.
Commander Charmain Brenyah, Met spokesperson for Carnival, said: “The news of Cher’s tragic death has devastated her family, the wider community and everyone involved in delivering Notting Hill Carnival.
“Carnival is about bringing people together in a positive celebration. That has ended with the tragic loss of life, among other incidents of serious violence, will be sad for everyone involved.”
Chef’s family ‘distraught’ after receiving ‘worst news imaginable’
Swedish national Mussie Imnetu, 41, who was visiting the UK from Dubai where she works, was found unconscious with head injuries in Queensway on Monday August 26, hours after leaving a private members club.
Officers provide first aid until paramedics arrive.
Mr Imnetu was taken to a west London hospital where, despite the best efforts of medical staff, he died on Friday, the Met Police said.
There’s Omar Wilson, 31, of Napier Road, Leytonstone was charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
He appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday, where he was remanded in custody to appear at Southwark Crown Court on September 27.
“In light of Mussie’s death, the offense will be reviewed together with the Crown Prosecution Service,” the Met said on Friday.
Mr Imnetu suffered a brain haemorrhage and multiple cardiac arrests, prosecutor Rhianne Neil told Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
He works as head chef at The Brasserie at The Arts Club and has worked for the likes of Gordon Ramsay, Alain Ducasse and Marcus Wareing.
He previously worked at Oblix in the Shard and The Savoy Grill, as well as The Arts Club in London, according to the private members club’s website.
The Swede had left The Arts Club in Dover Street shortly after 1pm on Monday.
He was alone and wearing a blue t-shirt and black jeans. He then bought a white baseball cap.
Mr. Imnetu then arrived alone at Dr Power’s restaurant in Queensway at around 10.30am.
This restaurant serves food from outside stalls and plays music while the place and its surroundings are crowded with people who have been there for the Carnival.
Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie, who is leading the investigation from the Met’s Homicide Command, said: “Mussie’s family, friends and colleagues in London, Dubai, Sweden and Eritrea are heartbroken after receiving the worst news imaginable – our thoughts are with him and he is still dealing with it. .supported by specialist officers.
“Our investigation is progressing, but we are still keen to hear from anyone who can help with Mussie’s movements between 1pm when we learned he left The Arts Club in Dover Street, W1 and when he arrived at Dr Power’s restaurant, in Queensway at 10pm :30.
“If you visited the restaurant between 10pm and 11.30pm on Monday night or were in the area and saw something, regardless of why you were there, please get in touch.
“Our focus is what happened to Mussie. Did you speak to him in the restaurant or do you have any pictures or videos between those times that could help the investigation? The attack happened around 11:20 p.m. Customers at the scene tried to help stop the attack ;we need to talk to these people and I ask them to contact us.
Officers will be outside the restaurant and in the surrounding area from 9pm on Monday 2 September “to hand out appeal leaflets and speak to local people a week after the murder”, the Met added.
