Skylar Samuels knew he had big shoes to fill in Aurora Teagarden Mystery next Candace Cameron Bure‘s out – but he’s ready to try.
“It was definitely a surprise role when they came to me with it Aurora life again,” Samuels, 30, exclusively told Us Weekly Tuesday, August 6, while promoting the new Hallmark rom-com, My dream is you. “I’m excited because I love a challenge, but I’m also a little nervous because I know there’s this long-standing fan base.”
Samuels knows there’s a “deep bench” for the Hallmark Mystery franchise because Cameron Bure, 48, played amateur sleuth Aurora Teagarden in 18 films before Samuels took over in 2023.
Samuels said when he started playing the young version of the titular character he was “asking to kind of reimagine Aurora in a way that doesn’t feel like I’m mimicking or copycatting” Cameron Bure’s style.
“I wanted to have my own Aurora but one that paid homage to the Aurora I knew and loved before,” she explained. “And I think our director, my friend and his wife work, Jessica Harmondid a great job like coming up with a sound that felt new and familiar at the same time. I think we have created a very good thread.
Cameron Bure began portraying the librarian-turned-sleuth in 2015. In April 2022, he announced that he was leaving Hallmark Media for an acting and producing project at Great American Media. The news came as a shock to fans, as Cameron Bure was dubbed the “Queen of Christmas” by many viewers for her holiday hits on the Hallmark Channel.
Hallmark recast Aurora in March 2023, announcing that Samuels’ version would lead the prequel franchise, documenting Aurora’s previous adventures.
“I think some people are, like, really excited for me right off the bat and others are like, ‘We’ll see, like, send the product and we’ll consider it,'” Samuels said. us of her casting.
Although in Scream Queens alum says that while he tries “not to get too stuck in the comments,” he’s happy to prove his critics wrong. Aurora puppet.
“It really means the most viewed comments where people are like, ‘I wasn’t sure about Skyler when he dumped her. I have a lot of skepticism. But I really love this and it’s super fun and I’m totally on board,'” Samuels continued. It’s like people who I think ‘OK, it’s like if I’ve changed their mind and, maybe, I can make people happy or make them rethink something they already know and love, like that, win.'”
Samuels has been “very grateful” that the fanbase has “embraced” him at the time, which has led the network to greenlight some more mysteries.
“At the beginning of this year, we made two and three films in Aurora series and he’s very happy,” she teased. “He’s a lot of fun and the more of these movies we do, like, the more of some juicy backstory we do with Arthur (played by Evan Roderick) and Aurora and … (will be the same), will not be the same content.
While there are no official release dates for the next two Aurora prequel movies, fans can see Samuels in his first rom-com for the network. My dream is you premieres this weekend and follows aspiring author Grace (Samuels) as she tries to find the man of her dreams, Michael (Kapil Talwalkar).
After a mix-up at Dream Central, Grace tries to find Michael in real life and soon realizes that he doesn’t understand the romance of dreams. But the truth is, it doesn’t mean the end of the love story that can be done.
“We don’t all have crystal balls, do we? There’s no way to know how things will turn out,” Samuels said us when talking about the film’s underlying message of dreaming and taking risks. “You obviously don’t want to fall flat on your face, but you don’t want to wonder what if you don’t try.”
Throughout the film, Grace has to step out of her comfort zone for the sake of her art and her heart – which Samuels applauds. “I hope people feel brave and keep going, even if it seems a little crazy,” he said.
Samuels teased that Grace and Michael “really know what the other person is doing” and that they “kind of inspire and support each other.” In the film, Grace wants to write, and Michael wants to pursue music and the two are at a crossroads.
“I think what makes them a good match is why it’s hard for them to find their way in the movie because they’re both aspiring artists,” Samuels added. “Michael is a musician, Grace is a writer and I think I know what other people do and not everyone does.”
My dream is you premieres Friday, August 10, at 8 pm ET.
