Readers make five fun suggestions for Marvel Vs. Capcom style games, including crossovers with Disney and Transformers.
As soon as Capcom announced Marvel Vs. Capcom Battle Collection: Arcade Classics fans like myself immediately hoped that this meant having a Marvel license and now being free to create new games. It’s not that simple though and there’s reason to think they don’t have the rights to anything other than the old game, but let’s pretend, eh?
Except I don’t want to make it obvious and just roll with the list of characters I think should be in Marvel Vs. Capcom 4 (or will it be 5?). However, and as a backup if you don’t have a license, here are some ideas from other cross-fighters that you can do.
It’s been around for years, including SNK and Tatsunoko (the anime company that makes G-Force). He has also collaborated with Namco and Sega a few times, although the only real fighter was Street Fighter X Tekken. They generally seem to be up for team-up with anyone, so I don’t think the following is as impossible as they sound.
DC Comics Vs. Capcom
Let’s get the obvious out of the way. It probably won’t happen because Warner Bros. own Mortal Kombat Edo NetherRealm but if it is, I will go over the moon because not only Capcom is a better fighting game developer but I like the way they reinterpret the characters – Marvel Vs. Capcom is still my favorite for many Marvel characters. Marvel Vs. DC would be great too, but that’s obviously not going to happen. Mortal Kombat Vs. Capcom doesn’t either, because Capcom doesn’t want people ripping Ryu’s head off.
Sega Vs. Capcom
I can’t believe this hasn’t been discussed in some way, but obviously Sega has a wide roster of both fighting games and recognizable characters. I’d like to keep it Sonic light and focus more on classic arcade and Dreamcast games, which can match what Sega is doing now, by trying to revive older titles. You’ll want the Virtua Fighter and Fighting Vipers crew in there, but I’ll also get some influence from Fighters Megamix, with weird stuff like Daytona USA cars and AM2 Palm Tree.
It’s weird, it’s better with cross-fighters, as far as I’m concerned, but while Sega is the most obvious partner, I’ll also use the same set-up for major Japanese publishers, including Bandai Namco, Square Enix, Konami, Koei. Tecmo, etc. And of course more SNK will be big.
Nintendo Vs. Capcom
The big ones, which deserve their own space. I would also be surprised if this hasn’t come up before, at least in a casual conversation between the two companies. I’ve enjoyed seeing 2D sprite-based versions of Mario, Link, Samus, and co. back in the 90s but I will settle for what these two chose to collaborate on. I don’t see much competition with Smash Bros., as the gameplay style will be very different, but I like that Nintendo designs Capcom characters and Capcom designs Nintendo. I think it’s pretty cool and maybe something Nintendo wants.
Disney Vs. Capcom
This is a big deal for Capcom, if they can convince them to do it. Obviously, you could do a Marvel Vs. Capcom, Star Wars Vs. Capcom, etc separately but a combined fighter with everything Disney has would be funny. They made Kingdom Hearts quite happy, although I suspect the fact that fighting games will put them to death. Punching Mikey Mouse in the face sounds bad but then doing the same to Mario and Peach in Smash Bros., so why not here? Having all of the cartoon characters and live action properties would be cool and there is a Disney Infinity toy to live action that mixes things up like that.
Transformers Vs. Capcom
Throw this one for GC but I actually don’t see it as a bad idea at all. It’s definitely more marketable than Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom and Hasbro don’t seem to care who licenses Transformers or what the quality of the games is. Again, one of the main attractions here is seeing Capcom’s take on Transformers, but what I think would be cool is that Capcom’s side is the robot version of the characters, which they change into other games. I think that would be an awesome gimmick.
