Teenage sport climber Toby Roberts won Britain’s 14th gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics after winning the men’s bouldering and lead competitions.
Roberts, 19, scored 155.2 points to beat favorite Sorato Anraku of Japan, who lost his grip and collapsed needing just 86 points on the main wall to put Roberts into the silver medal position.
Austria’s Jakob Schubert took bronze, with another Briton, Hamish McArthur, finishing fifth.
Roberts, given the nickname ‘The Terminator’ because of his determination BBC: “I’m really at a loss for words. To find out that I won gold at that moment, it was incredible.
“I’ve been training for this moment all my life, and now I just won. To say it hasn’t sunk in is an understatement.
“I don’t know what to think now, but I imagine later, there will just be a flood of emotions. It’s a goal I’ve been training for for 10 years, basically. There are no words.”
Roberts then added: “To find out you’ve won Olympic gold is a shock. It’s adrenaline, emotion and happiness.
“Hopefully this makes climbing bigger and bigger. The sport is growing in the UK with climbing gyms open, and it’s cool to see climbing on this big stage.”
KJT still has a chance at Olympic gold
At the Stade de France, Katarina Johnson-Thompson lost the top spot in the heptathlon to Nafissatou Thiam before the final event of the evening, the 800m, which took place at 1925 BST.
The reigning world champion started day two on the gold medal stand and retained the spot with a leap of 6.40 meters in the long jump.
However, Johnson-Thompson was pipped by two-time Olympic champion Thiam after the javelin, with the Belgian throwing 54.04m and Johnson-Thompson landing 45.49.
The Briton now trails Thiam by 121 points and will need to beat his rival by around eight seconds to win the gold medal in Paris.
Johnson-Thompson’s best time in the 800m was 2:05.63, more than six seconds ahead of Thiam’s 2:11.79.
