today’s WWE SmackDown results: New World Tag Team Champions and more
1) Randy Orton vs. Kevin Owens is officially set for Crown Jewel 2024
Orton expressed his frustration about doing everything in his power to face Kevin Owens at Crown Jewel, only to find Owens limited for some reason. He recalled that Nick Aldis told him last week that a match with Owens was beyond his pay grade, prompting him to demand answers from Triple H, who he accused of protecting Owens from him. Orton then calls Triple H into the ring, and Triple H responds by exiting. Orton demands a one-on-one match with Kevin Owens, and to his surprise, Triple H eventually agrees but warns Orton to always be on guard.
2) Special Guest Referee Match Andrade vs Carmelo Hayes
The match between Hayes and Andrade featured United States Champion LA Knight as Special Guest Referee. It was a fun contest that quickly turned chaotic, with even the referee getting in on the action. The turning point came when Hayes hit a back elbow on Andrade, who responded with a Spanish Fly off the ropes and a meteora in the corner, followed by a pin attempt. Hayes kicked out, but in doing so, he knocked Andrade into Knight at the count.
Taking advantage of the confusion, Hayes rolled up Andrade, but Knight missed the pinfall. Frustrated, Hayes confronted Knight, only to accidentally kick him while targeting Andrade. Andrade then sent The Three Amigos into Hayes, but Hayes countered by slamming him to the mat for a pin attempt. Chaos escalated as Knight dragged Hayes out of the ring, threw him onto the announce table, and hit the finisher, the BFT, on both Andrade and Hayes in the ring. Knight then rang his own bell, announcing the game instead as part of a Best of Seven series.
3) Candice LeRae vs. Naomi
The match between Naomi and LeRae was brief, with Naomi getting a straight victory. In the end, Naomi delivers a kick to LeRae’s head, but Hartwell interferes, sending Naomi into the ring post and throwing her back into the ring. Just then, Bayley’s music hits, and she rushes to ringside, taking out Hartwell by slamming him into the barricade. This opens up the opportunity for Naomi to execute a Full Nelson on LeRae, driving her to the mat for the win.
4) Cody Rhodes and Gunther verbal part
The tension between Cody Rhodes and Gunther escalated, as the two clashed in a heated brawl during a verbal exchange. It all started when Rhodes dismissed Gunther as “The Ring General,” claiming to lead no one but himself. Rhodes then said that he had the courage to make a name for himself outside of WWE before launching his attack on Gunther. Ludwig Kaiser then came out of nowhere to attack Rhodes, prompting a two-on-one attack by Gunther and Kaiser. However, Randy Orton rushed down to the ring despite the odds.
5) DIY vs. Motor City Machine Guns Number One Contenders Match for the WWE Tag Team Championship
The matchup between Motor City Machine Guns and DIY was fun from start to finish. Both teams unleashed a heavy assault, but the Motor City Machine Guns emerged victorious, earning the No. 1 Contenders title for the WWE World Tag Team Championship.
In the closing moments, Sabin tags in as Gargano kicks him in the head. Ciampa then entered the fight, and after Gargano hit Shelley in the midsection, Ciampa drove Shelley to the mat face-first and followed up with a running knee. Sabin manages to roll up Gargano, but Gargano reverses it. Sabin countered with a jawbreaker, and when Gargano tried to kick him, he accidentally hit Ciampa. Shelley then tags in, and the Motor City Machine Guns hit the Skull and Bones finisher to secure the win.
6) Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa vs Motor City Machine Guns for the WWE Tag Team Championship
The main event for the WWE Tag Team Championship was nothing short of epic, featuring the dramatic return of Jey Uso, an original member of The Bloodline, who reunited with Jimmy Uso. In a surprising twist, Motor City Machine Guns emerged victorious over Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa.
The match started with Loa hitting Shelley with a powerslam and looking to build momentum as Tonga followed. Shelley is able to roll out of the way, but Sikoa jumps to the apron. Suddenly, a hooded figure pulls Sikoa down, sending him crashing into the ring steps, revealing himself as Jimmy Uso. Despite help from Fatu, Sikoa was able to regain control until Roman Reigns’ music hit, signaling his arrival. Reigns brawls with Fatu to the backstage area while Sikoa brawls with Jimmy.
Back in the ring, Sabin delivers a dropkick to Tonga from the ropes and charges at him, accidentally colliding with the referee. Taking advantage, Loa shuts down Sabin and grabs a chair from the timekeeper’s area. As he prepares for one, a hooded figure comes out behind him and delivers a superkick, sending Loa through the announce table. The mystery figure then attacked Tonga with a chair and followed with a spear before revealing himself as Jey Uso! Motor City Machine Guns seized the moment and executed their finisher, Skull and Bones, to secure the win.
