Kamala Harris has pledged to appoint a Republican to her cabinet, if elected president, and has brushed off Donald Trump’s attempts to question her biracial identity in her first interview since becoming the Democratic nominee.
In an interview with running mate Tim Walz in Georgia, Harris told CNN that his “values” have not changed despite some reversals on key policy positions around immigration and fracking.
The vice president has made significant gains among key voting groups and has a five-point lead nationally over Donald Trump, according to the latest USA Today/Suffolk University poll, the first conducted by the group since the Democratic National Convention.
Meanwhile, her Republican rival continues to face backlash over her recent visit to Arlington National Cemetery after her campaign team filmed at the graves of fallen US soldiers for a TikTok video.
JD Vance, Trump’s running mate – who said Harris should “get out of hell” for withdrawing the Biden administration’s military from Afghanistan – denied that any staff abused and removed grave officials during a wreath-laying ceremony for 13 fallen service members. killed in a terrorist attack at Kabul airport in 2021.

Harris and Walz to sit down for their first unscripted campaign interview on CNN tonight
Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will sit down for the first unscripted interview together since the pair stepped on the Democratic ticket.
Harris has been on the campaign trail for several weeks and has yet to give an official interview or press conference.
But tonight (August 29), the vice president and his running mate will appear at the Dana Bash.
The interview will be broadcast at 9pm ET from Georgia, as Walz-Harris campaign bus plows the Peach State.
It marks the next major test in their bid for the White House as the pair rallied behind last week’s Democratic National Convention and, separately, offered a chance to kill dissenters.
The vice president has faced flak from a sea of Republicans – with a line of attacks often spearheaded by former President Donald Trump’s running mate JD Vance.
Earlier this month at a rally in Wisconsin, the governor of Ohio called it “deceitful” that Harris “refused to take a single question from the American media”.
