The TMC denied the allegations leveled by the doctor’s parents by posting the video on social media, whose versions differed, while the BJP demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal.
Family members of a trainee doctor, who was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, have made shocking accusations against the city police. Joining junior doctors who protested at medical institutions on Wednesday (September 4), the victim’s parents alleged that the Kolkata Police tried to close the case by bribing and hastily burying their daughter’s body.
This led to another political crisis with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) contesting the allegations by posting a different version of the video of the parents on social media.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), meanwhile, is demanding the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal.
What do parents say?
The doctor’s parents made strong allegations and said that on August 9, a senior police official gave them money and asked them to sign a white paper. He also said that there was a lot of pressure to cremate his daughter’s body which he did not want.
“The police, from the beginning, tried to cover up the case. We were not allowed to see the body and had to wait at the police station while the body was taken for post-mortem examination. Later, when the body was handed over, a senior police officer offered us money, which was immediately rejected,” said his father. the victim
At the same time, countering the parents’ claims, Trinamool Congress IT cell chief Debangshu Bhattacharya Dev posted a video on the social media platform, where the parents could be heard saying that money was not offered.
Posting a video of what parents say, Dev says, “Hear what parents have to say.”
In the video, which can not be independently verified by News18two people were heard saying, “We want justice, the police won’t give us money…”
Here are some questions that parents ask:
- Why did the authorities tell us that our daughter had died by suicide without checking?
- Why did it take us three hours to see our daughter even though we asked the police to let us see ourselves?
- Why are the authorities delaying post-mortem and registration of First Information Report (FIR) in the case?
- Why did the police file the case as an unnatural death in the first place?
- Why didn’t the hospital talk to us for at least seven hours?
What did the BJP say?
Releasing a video purportedly of a family member of a doctor speaking at the RG Kar protest, the BJP launched an attack on the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress on social media.
“If Mamata Banerjee and the Kolkata Police commissioner have any shame, they should resign immediately. Otherwise people of West Bengal will be devastated. Listen to the victim’s family as they narrate their ordeal,” BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya tweeted.
IF MAMATA BANERJEE AND KOLKATA POLICE COMMISSIONER HAVE NO SHAME, THEY SHOULD RESIGN IMMEDIATELY. IF NOT, THE PEOPLE OF WEST BENGAL WILL SEE IT. LISTEN to the victim’s family as they share their grief. Video 1 (1 minute 33 seconds)

Malviya also narrated the ordeal of the family after the body of the doctor was found in the seminar room of RG Kar Hospital. There are many accounts of how parents were not allowed to see their daughter’s body for at least three hours after arriving at a medical institution. Besides, the authorities also tried to mislead him about his daughter’s death by calling it suicide, he said.
“The brother of the young woman doctor who was raped and killed at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital said that the West Bengal administration hastily cremated the body. Her family did not want the cremation to take place but the Mamata Banerjee government did not listen and proceeded without the family’s consent,” Malviya said.
He accused senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who was counsel for the West Bengal government in the Supreme Court, of lying about the delay in the registration of the FIR. Malviya further stated that the deputy commissioner of police (north) gave money to the victim’s father to withdraw the case.
He said unless the Chief Minister and the Kolkata Police Commissioner resigned, “a free and fair investigation would not be possible”. He said that Banerjee and Goyal should be subjected to lie detection test and phone records should be examined.
“Unless Mamata Banerjee and Vineet Goyal, the Kolkata Police Commissioner resign, a free and fair investigation cannot take place. A lot of evidence has been destroyed. The call records of the CM and Kolkata CP, within 72 hours of the crime, should be put in the public domain. Their conversations should be investigated.” Mamata Banerjee and Vineet Goyal should be polygraphed, to find out the truth. The movement for justice will continue,” he said.
