Golf may often be described as a quiet game, however Collin Morikawa has met a brother with a fellow American golfer Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele.
In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly ahead of the 2024 Presidents Cup – which begins on Thursday, September 26, from the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Quebec, Canada – Morikawa, 27, spoke fondly of the bonds he has made with his friends in the United States and his family.
“I’ve known Scottie for over 12 years,” Morikawa said. “Xander and I were pretty close when he was out in Vegas for a few years. We played a lot of golf. It was just great for them and all the husbands together.
Colli is married to his wife Katherine Morikawa in November 2022. Schauffele, 30, is married Maya Lowe in July 2021 and Scheffler, 28, got married Meredith Scheffler in December 2020, before the couple welcomed their first child, Bennett, in May of this year.
More than a support system for his wife, Collin joked that players’ wives are good at staying humble.
“When the girls are around, there is zero golf talk,” he said. “They don’t care and, frankly, we don’t care about talking golf about girls.”
While Katherine may not be keen to hear about her husband’s days on the course, Collin gushed about what an important source of stability he has been since the two began dating at the University of California, Berkeley.
“When I turned professional (in 2019), he was there traveling with me and that’s what kept me going,” he recalled. “That was a big turning point, just having people there. They’ve been by my side even before this whole professional golf thing. They work hard at the things they want to do and to be honest, it’s just really motivating to have people like that by my side .
Katherine is quite the athlete, completing her first half marathon in November. When she completed another one in Las Vegas this February, Collin was by her side to celebrate.
“He’s big. I should give him more credit than I do and I feel very grateful,” said the golfer. “He’s amazing. He’s the rock of everything.
In addition to spending quality time with the Schefflers and Schauffeles, Collin said the Presidents Cup gave him an opportunity to start forming more bonds with members of the American squad.
“We spend every day and every second with him,” he said. “It’s nice to know that I know a lot of these guys. And people that I don’t know very well, we can hang out, relax and be comfortable with each other.
He added, “That’s part of having a good team and having a good week, just being comfortable with everyone.”
The 2024 Presidents Cup – which pits the USA against International Teams representing other countries minus Europe – continues until the final round on Sunday, September 29.
