NEW DELHI: A 30-year-old policeman on bike patrol was killed after a car driven by a man he had arrested minutes ago chased, hit and dragged him for more than 30 feet before crashing into a stationary vehicle on the west side. Delhi’s Nangloi at 2:15 a.m. on Sunday. The two people in the car were drunk and “accidentally” got off Constable Sandeep Malik (30) after he had allegedly stopped them from drinking in the police carm claimed. An FIR of murder was registered against two and one of them, Rajnish, was arrested. The car was impounded, and bottles of liquor and packets of crisps were found inside.
However, the motive alleged by the police – that he got angry after Sandeep denied drinking – does not match the contents of the initial diary entries made by the local police. The entry mentions the involvement of a liquor supplier named Jangra in the case and he urged the police to “finish the job”.
Police denied a “mafia angle”, but did not explain the contents of the diary. He said the attack was deliberate, and that one of the suspects owned a property rental business and the other family owned a general store. The probe may be handed over to the crime branch, sources said. The incident took place around 2.15 am. at Veena Enclave in Nangloi. Constable Sandeep was on routine patrol. While on duty but wearing civilian clothes due to the increasing number of theft cases in the area, Sandeep traveled to the railway from Nangloi Police Station at 2am.
He stopped after spotting a car parked suspiciously in the train car park and confronted the occupants. “He allegedly confronted two people who were drinking in a car in the railway yard parking lot. The constable ordered the duo to immediately leave for their home from there. The suspects, identified as Dharmender and Rajnish, refused. .
Constable Sandeep notices him and threatens to initiate legal action against him at his house, forcing him to vacate the premises. Dharmendra was angry at the incident. The defendant started driving ahead, and the police chased him on a motorcycle. After leaving the area, the accused stopped outside Veena Enclave Road and waited for the arrival of Constable Sandeep. The accused’s house is located some distance from this location.
The killing was caught on CCTV camera and the footage confirms that the policeman was taken down without provocation.
At 2:15 in the morning, the car reached the side of the road, backed up a bit and stopped on the side. At 2:16 a.m., when Constable Sandeep approached on his motorcycle and started heading towards the accused’s house, the accused followed him and sped away, according to the recording. During the crash, Sandeep let go of the motorcycle handle, his legs were thrown in the air, and he fell on the bike. Later, when the Wagon R collided with another vehicle, the policeman was placed between the suspect’s car and the other vehicle.
Although he was taken to Sonia Hospital and later transferred to Balaji Hospital in Paschim Vihar, he succumbed to his injuries. His body was handed over to the family after an autopsy.
The case took a darker turn after the contents of a police diary entry surfaced on Sunday afternoon. Though the police were quick to deny a ‘mafia angle’ behind the incident, his own diary entry which surfaced on Sunday afternoon seems to tell a different story.
“Gadi number DL 1C AA 76** ne hit kiya hai.. Murder hai..,” read the entry submitted by the local police. A diary entry, accessed by TOI, speaks of a man named Jangra, a liquor supplier, being involved. “The owner of the car goes by the name of Jangra..He owns a liquor business… Forced to get things done,” read the cryptic entry.
The diary entry also tells about another policeman, Khushi Ram of Ranhola police station who was present at the spot apart from two friends on a bike.
On liquor mafiathe police claimed: “It is clarified that until now no big mafia has come to light. The case of murder has been registered in section 103 of the BNS.”
Police did not comment on the diary entries. An official said he could only comment on this after the second suspect, who is also the main accused, is interrogated and his version is confirmed.
