Sir Keir Starmer has delivered his first speech as prime minister to world leaders at the United Nations in the US after leaving the Labor Party conference.
He used his speech at the UN General Assembly to pledge that his government would provide “global leadership” as the Middle East teeters on the brink of conflict and the bloody war in Ukraine continues.
In a difficult week after calling for the return of the “sausage” in Gaza during the conference gaffe, Sir Keir has been defeated in the vote to reverse the cut for future fuel payments.
The non-binding motion, titled An Economy for the Future and tabled by Sharon Graham of the Unite trade union and the Communications Workers Union (CWU), was passed by a hand in a rowdy hall at the Labor Party’s annual conference.
In a show of defiance, Unite general secretary Sharon Graham called on Labor members to rebel against the policy as she shouted: “This is not what the people voted for.”
The movement calls for the means to test future fuel allowances to be canceled and to end fiscal rules that prevent debt to invest, as well as the introduction of a wealth tax.e
Sir Keir defended his decision to accept £20,000 flat for his son to complete his GCSEs
Sir Keir Starmer said that after this “someone” offered to “make available” a flat for Starmer junior – but said “no money was exchanged”.
The prime minister’s register of interests shows a declaration of accommodation provided by Lord Waheed Alli for £20,437.28 from May 29 to July 13 this year. The election was held on May 22.
Speaking to Sky News from New York City, where he was attending the UN General Assembly, Sir Keir said the election had been called “not as expected” and that his son was in the middle of his GCSEs.
Sir Keir explained: “I said, ‘we’ll take you out of here and take you somewhere you can study and go to school and come back without having to go through all that’.
“And when someone says, well, I can provide you with this flat.
“Safe, safe, he can go up.”
The Prime Minister then continued: “I think sometimes it is important to look behind the numbers and say, ‘What is the human story behind'”.
“I’m not going to let my son fail or do poorly at GCSE because there’s a reporter out there,” he said.
Lord Alli, 59, the former chairman of online fashion giant Asos, is the biggest private donor.

Sir Keir admitted making ‘difficult decisions’ ahead of next month’s first budget
Sir Keir Starmer said he has “long believed in debt to invest”, which can act as a “catalyst” for private investment.

“How is the state of the country? What is the economic situation?
“And the two or three things that I’m saying is that dominance is a £22 billion black hole, Lord Darzi reported to the NHS, which is effectively saying that it’s on its knees, and of course it’s a terrible prison state. Now you have to make the correct diagnosis because you have to continue say, right, it’s our responsibility.
The Prime Minister told Channel 4 News: “I have always and for a long time believed in debt to invest. I think it is important for economic growth.

Sir Alan Bates blasts Labor for ‘stopping’ in Horizon scandal
Speaking after receiving a knighthood for services to justice at Windsor Castle, Sir Alan Bates said: “They (the Government) haven’t been in touch about what they’re proposing.
“We thought we had stopped with most of the plans because they didn’t seem to work, now they seem to have failed.”
The 70-year-old said the current financial scheme for those affected is a “mess”, adding: “We want the end date guaranteed by the Government at the end of March next year, and we can do it, according to legal discussions. I have.
“I think we need to get rid of the bureaucracy that is holding everything back and driving it underground, and this is proving a headache for many victims who are still suffering after so many years.”
More than 700 subpostmasters were prosecuted by the company and given criminal sentences between 1999 and 2015, because faulty Horizon Fujitsu IT systems made it look like money was missing in branches.

37 prisoners were wrongly released early from prison – 5 have not yet been found
Five prisoners wrongly released from prison under the Government’s early release scheme have not returned.
The mistake was made because the 37 prisoners were sentenced under outdated laws.
A Ministry of Justice spokesman told Sky News: “Public safety is our top priority. That’s why we are taking decisive action to fix the broken prison system we inherited and keep the most dangerous offenders safe.
“This includes preventing early release for domestic offenses such as stalking and controlling behaviour.
“We are working with the police to swiftly return some of the offenders – who were wrongfully prosecuted and convicted under the repealed laws – to custody.
“These convictions remain valid with offenders who have been supervised since their release and are likely to return.”

Russia sees its own citizens as ‘pieces of meat to grind’ – Starmer
When Sir Keir concluded his speech, he said: “We must ensure accountability to those who violate the UN charter. “The biggest violation of the charter in a generation has been committed by one of the permanent members of this council.
He called Russia’s invasion illegal and caused “enormous human suffering” with 35,000 civilians killed, 6 million forced to flee and 20,000 Ukrainian children kidnapped.
Sir Keir said: “I wonder how the Russians can show their faces in the building. 600,000 soldiers have been killed or wounded in this war and for what?
“The UN Charter, which we are here to uphold, speaks of the human dignity of not treating your fellow citizens as pieces of meat to be put through the mill.”

He added: “I say again let the hostages go. We have to deal with the humanitarian disaster in Gaza that is getting worse and worse.”
