Katy Perry have joined in trolling from Harrison Butker and celebrate Pride Month at the same time.
Over the weekend, the “Roar” singer released a response to the Kansas City Chiefs players Controversial commencement speech at Benedictine College in May, he took aim at what he called “dangerous gender ideology,” apparently referencing Sasi’s pride, and attacked the “devil’s lies” he claimed to have told women about finding happiness in their careers through their families.
Perry, an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ and women’s rights, pushed back by reducing Butker’s speech to only positive things and reframing his words to celebrate the achievements of women and June Pride Month — which has been celebrated since 1969.
“To the ladies of today, congratulations on your amazing accomplishments. You should be proud of everything you’ve accomplished so far in your young lives,” Perry’s edited version began.
“How many of you are sitting here right now going through this stage and thinking about all the promotions and titles you’ll have in your career?” the video continues, skipping over Butker’s line about women against “diabolical lies.”
Perry’s version continued, “I would venture to guess that women here today would lead successful careers in the world” instead of “I would venture to guess that the majority of you are very happy about the marriages and children you will bring into this world.”
“Fix this for girls, graduates, and gays – you can do anything, congratulations and be proud 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ 🧡,” Perry captioned the video, which has received 140,000 likes. ex American Idol judge turned off comments on the post.
In his actual speech, Butker continued to talk to his wife, Isabelle, who he said has experienced a more fulfilling life after receiving “one of the most important titles: housewife,” telling those present that she “dreams of having. Career it might not happen” but he prefers it.
“I can say all this to you because I have seen it first hand. How much more happy people can support women and not say that the majority of you are excited about marriage and the children that will bring into this world,” the video continues.
Perry — clearly irritated by the speech — concluded his version by celebrating progressive ideals and Butker wishing his 206 million Instagram followers a Happy Pride Month.
“The road ahead is bright. Things have changed, society has changed, and young people and old people are embracing diversity, equality and inclusion. With that said, I want to wish you all a Happy Pride Month and congratulations to the class of 2024,” version Speech editing is complete.
The singer isn’t the first big name to respond to Butker’s comments. In the week since his words became public, everyone from NFL officials to him Kansas City Chiefs teammates and actors like Patricia Heaton — that lend her support for Butker — already considered.
Most recently (and perhaps most importantly), Jason and Travis Kelce handled the situation when the the conversation turned to Butker during the episode from him New Heights podcast. Travis, 34, said that while Butker was a dear friend, they always disagreed on politics.
“When it comes to his views and what he said in his (Benedictine College) commencement speech, you know, that’s his (opinion). It’s– outside of just him loving his family or his children, I don’t think I should judge him by his views , especially about religion about life,” said the Kansas City Chiefs.
As for Perry — who is leaving American Idol in May however expressed interest in potential returns down — he’s now finding major happiness in his career as he seems to be teasing new music after years away and a sprawling Las Vegas residency.
In May, the “Dark Horse” singer changed her name Instagram for TikTok glass, as well as him Spotify channel profile (shows an orange background with bubbles) and even his own website, which many KatyCats take to mean new songs are coming. The theme features the futuristic “KP” initials in chrome on an orange background.
“KATY PERRY IS COMING,” wrote one X user.
Another added, “Omg she’s coming, KATY PERRY IS COMING,” followed by a GIF of Kermit the Frog losing his mind.
Perry hasn’t confirmed the prediction publicly, but it’s safe to say that everyone has their fingers crossed.
