Kate Winslet hate to burst everyone’s bubble, but the door scene is good Titanic not as terrible for a movie as fans think.
In a recent interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Winslet, 48, who played Rose DeWitt Bukater in the 1997 smash hit, revealed that she and her costar Leonardo DiCaprio filmed the scene of the door in “waist-high” water.
“Well it’s an awkward tank, that one,” Winslet told the host Josh Horowitz. “To pop a bubble, waist-high, tank. So at first, I was like, ‘Ugh, can I just pee,’ and then I would get up, go out the door, walk to the edge of the tank that was 20 feet away, and I really had to put my foot down and get out of the tank and pee then come back and crawl in the door again.
Winslet later revealed that DiCaprio, 49, knelt during filming (spoiler alert) death scene, which has been much discussed over the years.
“It’s terrible to admit this … Leo, I’m afraid, kneeling down under the tank,” he revealed. “I don’t have to talk about it. (Director) James Cameron‘It would sound like, ‘Why are you saying all that?'”
Winslet continued: “The amazing thing about the edge of the tank is that it’s an infinite tank, so there’s a continuous flow of water, and you can hear the continuous sound of the water.”
Apparently, the sound of moving water is so powerful that Winslet said the dialogue in the last 20 minutes of the film was re-recorded in the studio, including Rose shouting, “Jack! Jack!”
Quick refresh (another spoiler): DiCaprio’s character, Jack Dawson, died after being submerged in cold water for hours after the Titanic sank. Her hand finally froze in Rose’s as she floated safely through the door in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean before being found by a lifeboat.
Over the years, many have questioned whether Jack could fit in the door along with Rose, and it finally gave fans a happy ending.
During the press tour for Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood in 2019, DiCaprio said “no comment” when asked about his thoughts. His costars Brad Pitt and Margot RobbieHowever, believe that Rose could have made some room.
“I don’t know,” Winslet said when asked about her own controversial scene in a previous interview with Horowitz in 2022. and how she acted. If you put two adults on a stand-up paddleboard, it becomes very, very unstable. That’s for sure.”
Winslet added: “I have to be honest: I don’t believe that we will survive if both of them enter the door. I think that they will fit, but it will be a tip and it will not be a sustainable idea”
He concluded, “Yes, they can be attached to that door. But they won’t stay afloat. They won’t.”
Filmmaker Cameron put an end to the speculation in a National Geographic 2023 special Titanic: 25 Years Later With James Cameron while working with a team of scientists to re-create the scene and try four different scenarios in which Jack actually climbed the high door.
In the end, he realizes that Jack will have a hard time surviving even if he joins Rose in the wreckage.
“I think his thought process was, ‘I’m not going to do anything to harm him,’ and that’s 100 percent in character,” the director said.
