Jennie Garth suffered from two consecutive miscarriages after tying the knot with her husband Dave Abrams.
“We got married on July 11,” Abrams, 43, said on the Wednesday, Oct. 2, episode of Garth’s “I Choose Me With Jennie Garth” podcast. “Then we got pregnant in the same month.”
Garth, 52, added that it was a natural pregnancy. Abrams recalls being surprised and excited that he would become a father so quickly in their relationship. Garth notes that she doesn’t remember the pregnancy because she’s “blocked out.”
Abrams reminded his wife that he went to the doctor and everything was “fine.” However, a drastic change “almost four months” later.
“We know there’s no heartbeat,” he said when he got emotional.
Garth indicated that after learning about her pregnancy condition she should request a dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure, which removes tissue from inside the uterus, according to the Mayo Clinic. The actress was done the same day they learned about the baby’s condition.
“I reminded them that we could just wait and let it go,” Garth reflected. “Let nature take its course or we can do the procedure. And we choose to do the procedure because it is too much to carry a baby that has been aborted.
Abrams shared that after going through a difficult time with his wife, he tries to think of something bright. However, the couple found themselves in a similar situation.
“But it happened again,” Abrams recalled as Garth added, “Of course it did.”
Garth admits he doesn’t remember the details of the second miscarriage either. Abrams warned her that it was a “shorter” pregnancy and that she should “switch doctors”.
“I think the doctor at the time was like, ‘Well, it’s not going to be healthy anyway.’ Then we did the D&C again,” he said. “And at that point, I think I was going through emotions that I didn’t know how to communicate at the time. So, we just wrapped it up and then there were other things in the fold.
When a pregnancy loss takes a toll on Abrams and Garth, the couple seeks out a therapist to help them. However, the two admit that neither of them wants to talk about their sadness and grief.
Garth admitted that he really wanted to have children with Abrams, because he received three daughters with his ex-wife. Peter Facinelli. The exes share daughters Luca, 26, Lola, 21, and Fiona, 17.
“I think at that time, I felt very sad, very ashamed, like I let you down, like I couldn’t get pregnant with you, the one I love,” she described. “And I have these three beautiful daughters with Peter, and you’ve stepped in and been a wonderful stepfather to them.”
Last month, Garth opened up about how he was looking into IVF treatment with Abrams. After going through several unsuccessful attempts, Abrams and Garth went through a 10-month separation, which they credited to infertility problems.
“(We) tried to have a baby, and kept failing,” Garth said in a September interview SELF. “And it’s really hard on yourself and your relationship.”
In 2015, Garth and Abrams became engaged and married later that year. The duo filed for divorce in April 2017 but later reconciled. Abrams finally filed a petition to dismiss the divorce proceedings in February 2019.
