World No. 1 Iga Swiatek enjoyed a double bagel breakfast in Paris, beating Anastasia Potapova 6-0 6-0 to reach the French Open quarter-finals.
The third champion took to the court an hour early at 11am local time as organizers tried to get the schedule back on track after all the rain delays.
And it took Swiatek just 40 minutes, one of the shortest matches in Roland Garros history, to dispatch the Russian.
She managed just two unforced errors to Potapova’s 19 and won 94 percent of her first-serve points.
Of the 58 points played in the match, the 23-year-old Potapova won just 10.
“I was just very focused, in the zone and not looking at the score, and yes it was very fast, very strange,” Swiatek said.
“Because we played so early with the roof open, it should be a bit different but still not too warm. It’s not like summer in Europe but we’ll see what it’s like in two days.”
Potapova played in the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career, but Swiatek dominated the game and did not give her opponent time to breathe between points.
Potapova broke Swiatek’s serve in the odd chance to claim a pair of winners, but a near-perfect shot from the Pole left the Russian without an answer as the top seed wrapped up the first set in 19 minutes.
The crowd at Court Philippe-Chatrier tried their best to support Potapova, but Swiatek looked relaxed, forcing the Russian into a few errors as the top seed consolidated the early break.
The only problem Swiatek had was the swirling wind during the service, with the roof finally opening after several days of rain.
Swiatek finally put her former junior rival Potapova out of her misery, and the world number 41 stormed off the court. Swiatek will face the Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in the quarter finals.
The 2019 Roland Garros runner-up easily won 6-4 6-2 in the fourth round against Serbian qualifier Olga Danilovic.
Gauff cruises past Cocciaretto
US Open champion Coco Gauff it was far too strong for the Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto, the seal won 6-1 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals.
The match started quickly, with 45th-ranked Cocciaretto winning just two points in the first four games thanks to unforced errors by Gauff, a 2022 finalist in Paris.
Cocciaretto regained his confidence at the end of the first set with a longer rally and some winning shots, but Gauff held the lead, losing just one game to his 23-year-old opponent.
Gauff, who landed just 56 percent of her first serves, suffered a small slump early in the second set, losing her first service game and allowing Italy to respond.
Cocciaretto managed to win one of her service games but it was not enough to beat Gauff who finished the match in exactly one hour.
In the quarterfinals, Gauff, who is aiming to become the first American to win Roland Garros since Serena Williams in 2015, will face the winner of the match between Tunisia. Ounces of Jabeur and Dane Clara Tauson.
