In the new – and final – Netflix stand-up special, Ellen DeGeneres admits that “destroying” is labeled mean, but he doesn’t care what people think.
The former talk show host, 66, tackled allegations of creating a toxic workplace The Ellen DeGeneres Showwhich aired from 2003 to 2022, said he was “happy not to be the boss or the brand or the billboard” anymore.
“I’m proud of who I am,” DeGeneres said Ellen DeGeneres: To be approvedwhich premieres Tuesday, September 24, on Netflix.
“(I’m) just a multifaceted person with different feelings and emotions, and I can be happy and sad and passionate or frustrated,” DeGeneres explained. “I have OCD and ADD. I am honest. I am generous. I am sensitive and thoughtful. But I am difficult and impatient and demanding. I am direct. I am a strong woman.”
DeGeneres says she’s spent her entire career in Hollywood worrying about what people think, but with the controversy surrounding her talk show in 2020, she’s gained perspective on what’s important.
“So, after a lifetime of caring, I can’t do it anymore. So I don’t,” the comedian said.
“I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, ‘What other people think of me is none of my business.’ People will say and think different things and you can’t control them. But you know what’s right and what’s important,” DeGeneres said. “But it’s easier said than done. Because in this business, I have to care what people think. Because being a comedian or a host, that’s the only real currency for success. If they like you, you’re in, and if they don’t, you’re out. And I’ve spent my whole life trying to make people happy, and I’ve cared a lot about what other people think of me.
DeGeneres continued, “So the thought of anyone thinking I’m mean really hurts me and it’s gotten worse over time. But with time, you gain perspective, which is one of the good things about getting older. With perspective, you realize you care about what people think. , to a degree, it’s healthy. But not if it affects your mental health.
DeGeneres, who once entered the talk show with the line, “Be kind to one another,” said she would like to be remembered in a positive way as she walks away from her career.
“If I’m honest and I have a choice of people remembering me as a bad person or a loved one, I choose,” he said.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show ended in May 2022 after 19 seasons, and during her tour, the comedian was honest about her heartbreak over how the show ended in controversy.
“I give them stuff … and I dance, and then I’m mean and they don’t like me anymore,” he said during a show in West Hollywood in April. “It has taken a toll on my ego and my self-esteem. There are extremes in this business, people either love you and your idols or they hate you, and those people are louder.
“Honestly, I make jokes about what happened to me, but it’s devastating,” DeGeneres said on the show. “I just hate the way the show ended. I really enjoyed the show and I just hate that people ended up seeing me like that.
