Courteney Cox has shared a big update on Scream 7 and it doesn’t look good for Gale Weathers…
The Friends icon, 60, has starred as a cutthroat reporter in all six installments of the slasher franchise so far, having made his debut in the original 1996 film.
It is unclear whether the seventh film will appear in daylight after Spyglass film bosses reportedly fired Melissa Barrera from the role of Sam Carpenter, following comments she made on social media about Israel’s conflict with Hamas.
Wednesday star Jenna Ortega then left, before Neve Campbell announced her surprise return in March – after she took a backseat to 2023’s Scream VI due to salary issues.
Although the final girl is officially back on board, Courteney revealed that she has not ‘officially signed on’ for the upcoming slasher yet.
‘I’m not officially signed,’ he told Variety when discussing possible updates. ‘No, but there will be Scream 7.
‘He rewrites all the time. It’s not like I don’t know what’s going on.’
There have been big changes to the line-up since the Spyglass movie was officially announced, with Melissa, Jenna and director Christopher Landon all leaving.
Fans threatened a boycott over the way Melissa’s exit was handled, and their anger was not quelled by the announcement of Neve’s return, or the news that Kevin Williamson – who wrote and produced many of the installments – would be directing.
While Courteney doesn’t have a timeline for when she’ll decide to fight Ghostface again, she’s thrilled to have Kevin back.
‘You can’t get any better than that choice,’ he vowed. ‘It will be fun.’
If Kevin happens to read, the Cougartown icon also has a suggestion for the seventh movie, asking his former co-star David Arquette to make a surprise comeback as Dewey Riley after he was brutally killed in Scream 5.
‘I know the reason he did it, but whoa! Speaking of missed characters,” he added. ‘Dewey is a huge hit with Scream fans. They need to find out.’
To you, Kevin…
Although Courteney has not officially bowed out of the entire Scream, fans were left devastated by his words, with some insisting that they did not want to watch.
Imani3.0 tweeted: ‘What’s the point of a screaming movie if Gale Weathers isn’t there…?’
PieceByPiece_KC agreed: ‘We don’t want Courtney to be out.’
‘I mean I’m not going to watch it, but now I’m going to do more (sic),’ K fumed.
On Reddit, Seirolac wrote: ‘The list is getting longer and longer because I don’t see this.’
Jacob520Lep said: ‘He’s the only one who’s in everything.. it’s a shame he’s not involved at all.’
As ForryOMalley added: ‘If he is not in the film, it will be a huge loss.’
While the cast is still unclear and the plot is still under wraps, Neve previously teased that her character – who survived the first five films – will be the main focus of the new film as she faces Ghostface for the sixth time.
‘We’re going after Sidney,’ she told Entertainment Tonight. ‘He gave me the concept, and that’s why I jumped.
‘I love these films, they’re such a joy to be a part of, I’m so grateful to them, I can’t imagine being a part of a film that will last these decades.’
