Coronation Street has officially confirmed John Thomson will reprise his role as Jesse Chadwick for Gail Platt’s (Helen Worth) exit storyline.
Earlier this year, after Gail was announced, Sean Wilson was rumored to be returning to the ITV soap as Martin Platt.
A few weeks later, it was reported that Sean had left the show very suddenly, and that John Thomson was set to replace him.
First coming in 2008, Jesse is back in Weatherfield along with Eileen (Sue Cleaver). Back after time away in Thailand, Eileen is surprised to see Jesse on the cobbles – and even more so when he tells her why he’s in town.
Discussing his return and what brings the character of Jesse back to Weatherfield, John revealed that at the time of the call to the Chief returned to show it was ‘perfect’.
‘I have a young daughter so I don’t like traveling away from home and even though I last appeared on the show 15 years ago, it felt like catching up with an old friend I hadn’t seen for a long time. time and years just disappear.’
‘What I like is the way it has changed’, he said, pondering over Jesse we will meet soon.
‘The old saying goes, never work with children and animals, well Jesse is a children’s entertainer who has a parrot! He also pulled so that I always thought that it could be the end of a person, thrown in an electrical accident, but that never manifested and it was true romantic misdemeanors that led to the exit. So it was quite a relief not to have to deal with children and animals this time.
‘He always had that cowboy, country and western look, his name was Jesse James Chadwick. But now that he’s smart, his appearance has changed and I’ve gotten rid of the painful boots to my relief! He still has a great sense of humor and has some great comedy to play. It’s a joy to be given something that’s sometimes dramatic and sometimes funny, it’s great to get to play both sides.’
When Jesse climbs out of the taxi on the cobbles, he is immediately spotted by his former flame Eileen (Sue Cleaver). Despite the history between them, Jesse doesn’t want to follow her, as John explains:
‘No, he wasn’t ready to see Eileen after so much had happened between them. When Jesse left he had spread the bet over the two brothers, which was a bit morally bankrupt to say the least. He has changed dramatically because he is very remorseful for that behavior, so for him to think that Eileen even contemplates having him back after he made a play for his sister is not on his radar.
“I don’t think the new Jesse can take comfort in being with Eileen again because of his actions in the past.”
‘He met Gail in Thailand, he heard about Bethany and he was very worried’, John added, revealing why Jesse returned to Coronation Street land.

‘So on the trip he went back through Weatherfield to check on Gail, as he kept in touch by email. He had heard all about Bethany and he was very concerned about Gail.’
He laughed: ‘Be like him and both hate him! Shona and Nick are ready to give them the benefit of the doubt, while David and Sarah are not, it’s just total mistrust from the start. There is a thought that they should be decent people in life but as soon as David lists all Gail before it is no wonder that there is mistrust because Gail’s sense of judgment towards people is very poor.
‘Really Shona and Nick were very generous in their offer to wipe thin and see if Jesse might be given Gail’s history. Jesse has to work hard to get David and Sarah on his side and realize that he’s just a friend who cares about Gail because there’s a lot of mistrust about her motives.’
