The presenter and his wife Portia de Rossi are said to be “very disillusioned” with the prospect of life in America under the Republican president-elect and said they are “not going back”.
Mr. Trump’s election victory caused grief from America’s more liberal voters, as well as international concern about what the presidency means for climate change, women’s reproductive rights, geo-political security and the survival of democracy itself.
Ms. Degeneres has apparently put her money (and mortgage) where her mouth is and followed through on promises that other Democrat-supporting celebrities have made.
We haven’t had any reports of other A-listers fleeing the US ahead of Mr Trump’s inauguration in January (or, for that matter, stories of Cotswolds residents who say they’re selling their homes to avoid their new neighbours).
It’s unclear whether the celebrities in question mean what they say, but here are some high-profile people who have suggested they might leave the US.
Cher even quipped that she would try to leave the planet

Cher has made no secret of her opposition to the Trump administration, previously saying she would try to leave the planet if he became president.
In 2023, the musician reiterated his commitment to leave the country if Mr. Trump is re-elected, explaining that he is experiencing health problems for the first time.
“I almost got an ulcer at the end. If they come in, who knows? This time I will leave (the country),” Cher told the Guardian in 2023.
As a staunch advocate for trans rights, the 78-year-old star urged people to stay united instead of being drawn to Republicans trying to shore up division.
“It’s like 500 bills they’re trying to pass,” Cher said about the anti-trans movement. “I was with two trans girls that night — and, of course, my own son (Chaz is trans). I said, ‘We have to stand together.’ I don’t know what the final plan is for trans people. I don’t put anything in it.”
Sharon Stone is looking for a house in Italy

Earlier this year, American actor and film producer Sharon Stone suggested she would like to live in Europe if Trump is re-elected.
Speaking to Mail Online, Stone admitted: “I’m definitely considering a house in Italy.”
Describing what he disliked in the Trump camp, Stone explained that he felt the Republican candidate ran a “hateful” campaign.
He added: “I think it’s a smart construction at this point. It’s one of the first times in my life that I’ve actually seen anyone run for office on a platform of hate and oppression.
Barbra Streisand suggested she would move to Canada

Actor and singer Barbra Streisand has suggested that she likes the idea of living in Britain, if Mr Trump returns to power this time.
Speaking to talk show host Stephen Colbert at the end of 2023, the 82-year-old star disagreed with the Republican candidate.
“I can’t live in this country if he’s president,” he said.
After Mr Trump’s election, he took to social media to say there were “no words left”.
In another post, he added: “Kamala Harris sent a message of hope when she said, ‘Only when it’s dark can you see the stars.’ Thank you, Kamala.”
This is not the first time the movie star has suggested he will leave the US, having previously expressed similar sentiments before the 2016 election.
“I’ll come to your country, if you let me in, or Canada,” he said in a 60 Minutes interview at the time, though he never followed through on his promise.

Whoopi Goldberg promised to isolate herself in 2016 but ended up not going – prompting Mr Trump to mock her online.
The actress, unsurprisingly, did not see eye to eye with Mr Trump and continued to be a critic.
He has not clarified his intentions this time.
Another star who promised to go
When Mr. Trump first became president in 2016, several other stars also vowed to leave the country, including Miley Cyrus, Bryan Cranston, Lena Dunham, and Samuel L Jackson.
However, most later backpedaled on the claims and decided to stay.
