Caroline Dubois is waiting for her chance to box for the WBC lightweight world championship that Katie Taylor holds.
Taylor’s last three fights have all been for the undisputed super lightweight championship. But that means the WBC lightweight belt has gone uncontested for more than two years.
Dubois has risen to become the WBC Interim titlist at 135lbs and will finally have the right to fight for the full world championship. First, Taylor had to decide which division he would continue to compete in.
“I have to wear the belt. Katie has to come back down and fight me or drop the belt,” Dubois said. Sky Sports.
“He has not fought for the belt for over a year now. It seems obvious that he will not go back down to 135lbs. So he is just hoarding the belt, stopping me in my tracks and my future and my career, for what purpose?
“She’s done well in her career, she’s fought Amanda Serrano, I’m sure she’ll want a trilogy, it’ll be a big money fight. But it’ll be at 140lbs.
“So there’s no business even holding the belt. Just let it go and I get on with my career and he can get on with it.”
His message to Taylor was: “Now it’s my turn, it’s my turn to do the same, be undisputed at 135lbs.”
If Taylor doesn’t vacate the lightweight title, Dubois wants to challenge Rhiannon Dixon, the WBC’s No. 1 ranked contender, for the full championship and then unify with new WBO titlist Terri Harper next year.
“I want to fight Rhiannon Dixon,” Dubois said. “I’m sure he wants to have a chance to get back into the world title fight.
“I don’t think there are many situations where you lose the belt and then in the next fight you get another world title. Take it or leave it.
“Another chance for him to redeem himself and become world champion and if not, I will take the next hardest competition.”
Dubois will receive a high-profile merger with Harper. “Of course,” said Dubois. “The belt is mine, now he’s holding it, he knows his heart isn’t in the game, his mind isn’t in the game.
“He has tried to pull it together as much as possible but he has shown his character, which stopped. He crumbles under pressure and I think he wants me to come take that belt from him and I think that is what will happen.
“I think they want a paycheck and a chance to sail off into the sunset.”
Amanda Serrano’s promoter, Nakisa Bidarian, identified Dubois as an upcoming opponent for the American star.
“They have seen my potential. I also bring something new to the game,” said Dubois.
“To finally get the belt at 135lbs is going to be something I’m sure he’s going to be very excited about. I’ll give him that opportunity, I’ll give him a shot if he’s willing to take it.
“People want to judge me and say I’m not in the big leagues, I haven’t been up there. I know, I haven’t won a world title and I haven’t been in, let’s say, a big fight.
“But in terms of skill, ability, pedigree, I’m there for everything. I’m sure I’m there.”
