Here’s What Authorities Believe A 19-Year-Old University of Tampa Student Dumped Her Baby In The Trash
According to ABC Action News, on April 27, campus security for the University of Tampa alerted police about a student who may have had a miscarriage. A student reportedly heard a baby crying in Moore’s dorm room.
“They live in a box, four girls who live in a bedroom with a common area and a shared bathroom. They heard a baby crying, and they called the police that day when they found blood on the bathroom floor in the shared bathroom,” said Suzy Lopez , the Hillsborough County State’s Attorney, according to the outlet.
Medical officials reportedly responded to the call and checked on Moore. However, she informed the officials that she was having her menstrual cycle.
The next day, police received a separate call from campus security. Officials reportedly found the baby’s body in a trash can.
“University of Tampa campus security arrived and found what appeared to be a full-term newborn baby, wrapped in a towel and placed in a trash can,” Lopez added, per ABC Action News.
According to a Tampa police news release, the baby was later identified as Moore’s child. KPTV noted that Moore eventually admitted to giving birth to the child. In addition, authorities used an autopsy to determine that the baby died of “asphyxia and broken ribs.” Subsequently, the case was ruled a murder.
Lopez reportedly explained that the baby’s death was “inevitable.” Florida is reportedly upholding the Safe Haven Law, which allows “parents to anonymously surrender infants seven days of age or younger” to public safety officials without penalty.
“For crying out loud, there’s a fire station across the street from the University of Tampa,” Lopez said, per the Daily Mail. “Tampa General Hospital is only two to three minutes away by car.”

A Mother In California Was Arrested For A Similar Incident
In addition, the state of California also offers a “Safely Delivered Baby Program.” According to the Department of Social Services, the program allows “parents or people with legal custody to safely surrender … babies within 72 hours of birth, without any questions.” Furthermore, the program was highlighted after the arrest of Kathryn Grace Copeland in September.
As The Shade Room previously reported, Copeland is accused of fathering a baby. Later, the child was shot and died in the parking lot. The incident also led to Copeland’s arrest and prosecution.
